Can some one please show me an official stat where it shows people are living longer? I personally don't believe what politicians tell us because it seems there is always something in it for them to push their unpopular policies through. Unfortunately others simply parrot them and they become a cliche.

I would like to see the results of a proper survey with detailed analysis showing we are indeed living longer. Thanks

A quick google of life expectancy rates UK came up with this document

    http://www.parliament.uk/documents/commons/lib/research/rp99/rp99-111.pdf

I havent read the whole document but page 8 shows a pretty graph of rising life expectancy. But the document was published by the government so it may all be a lie. :D

I'd be careful here. There are some suggestions afloat that some of the actuarial assumptions about the CONTINUED increase in lifeexpectancy may be flawed.
Many of the dramatic increase that are down to better living conditions, treatments and, in particular, the decline of smoking. These factors have already ben built in and future increases may not follow.

The reality though is that we are all living longer than twenty or thirty years ago and the cost of pensions in the public sector comapred to the contribution is completely unrealistic.

Perhaps there are some areas where compromise could be found.

If I have some sympathy though it would be the increase in retirement age in some occupations. I wouldn't want to control a class of unruly teenagers at the age of 67!

I'm a public sector worker who will be retiring (according to the pension forecast I got last year and depending on me retiring at 63) with a pension of £5000 after 40 years service - hardly gold plated.

Irrespective any arguments regarding pension reform, this is an example an overused and thoroughly STUPID observation.

How can a benefits be judge without context to what was sacrificed or put into the scheme?

Relative to what was put in, the public sector schemes have presented an excellent return for their members.
  • People are living longer - yes they may be at the moment, but when Iran goes nuclear in the very close future things may change a little bit.
A few 'dirty' bombs in London,Manchester and Glasgow will soon drop these figures we see bandied around here.
and who is Iran's most hated (with a vengance)target - oh yes that would be us! - they even prefer the USA more.

Actually, I suspect they'd attack Israel first.

That's not entirely the point though. Are you suggesting that we not bother with pension provision because something might happen? That's your choice to make, but personally I aim to have enough money to heat my home and feed myself when I retire...
  • If your a public sector employee Zelazny then you will be lucky as by the time this lot are through with you - you will be able to stay in work and be warm till your around 97.
Heck I am sure with some encouragement they will even set you up a bed and deduct a small amount for meals.

The politician is a type of creature known for its propensity to lie

The beggar thy neighbour which the politicians are playing with the public is obscene. "the situation has changed and the country's in a mess, therefore your pension which you signed up to is to be changed to something less favourable to you, now suck it up!" Why are PFI agreements, which are THE most expensive way of financing services, not renegotiated. Why hasn't the government gone to the CEOs of PFI companies, let's say the one getting £40k a day for services a dozen or so brand new & EMPTY fire command centre buildings, and said sorry we can not afford the PFI agreements tieing the tax payer in for 25years no matter what happens, SO, now we will pay a lot less for a lot fewer years AND only when the services are actually being delivered??????????????????

The answer is the tax payer will be made to bleed before any corporate entity has to forego even a penny they, their lawyer and complicit politicians have and are defrauding the taxpayer of. The pension debacle is because the financial institutions have gambled and stolen most of the pension money, more and more tax revenues have been used to cover the publicised losses of the banks, while they retain private owned profits, so the pensions are going to have to suffer a huge loss for the bonus culture of the fraudulent money system.

The 99% taxpayers - too big not to steal from.

    Can I paraphrase you?

Basically politicians (including the last lot) and many senior public servants couldn't organise a proverbial drinking session in a brewery.

Also what about the billions that the Revenue are writing off and, guess what, the head honcho from the HMRC will be taking his early retirement with his mini Fred-style payoff for a job (not so) well done.

It's dead easy to waste other peoples (taxpayers) money and, until senior public sector workers wise up, then the rank and file will have to pay.
