Right, trying to fix an old computer, power goes into tower unit, fans come on but then nothing further, screen shows No Input (or smething to that effect)
I decide it could be the RAM stick, so move it along to the next hole, turn on again and this time smoke! Smoke coming from the RAM stick, so I cut the power very quickly, move it back to the original slot and turn it on, this time the LED on the MB is on, this implys power is going in and I have not blown a fuse, but nothing else happens, no fans no HDD/FDD/CD noise it just sits there, ideas?

Sounds like you didn't seat the ram correctly. Try it without the ram.. if it doesn't beep or allow you into the bios, then it's bust. Could be PSU or motherboard or processor or graphics card.. difficult to diagnose without swapping everything.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0

Right, re-fitted the RAM and it now works, and it completly works which is weird, it had worked a few weeks ago, no one had touched it, but now it went straight into the bios and has said about the CPU hanging on start up which I believe could have caused it (I maybe got overambitious with the speed of the CPU)0

Everyone knows that the manufacturers build smoke into the internal parts. When the smoke comes out, they don't work any more. You have to take the equipment to a repair shop that can put the smoke back inside.0
