WTC how does it work?

This is the first time I applied for WTC as a new claim, so I remembered in the form there was section asking for current empolyer's detail and last tax year 04/2010 - 03/2011 income.
Filled those in, send the form off to HMRC ( I think, cant remember the exact address). Heard nothing from them since 01/11/11.
Today I checked on my bank account like usual, found out there was a large sum of £400+ gone into it and the item description says "WORKING TAX CREDIT" in bold....
Kinda wondered me, thought i was supposed to receive a letter to confirm what I am entitled to before they pay in.
Also for that large sum of £400+ , is that for current tax year or for last 2010 - 2011 tax period?
Finally do they pay in large sum or each week or fortnight for current 2011 -2012 tax period?
Many thx:beer::beer:

sent mine back on 1/11/2011 as I was saying in the post, phoned the WTC 0845 number, they said they cant check the progress of my claim at the moment due to high volume of claim backlogged up to 3 weeks.
Strange though I got WTC into my account already, so i assumed what @spartacusthe1st said is what happening in my case.0 -
Every time I've had to change circumstances the letters have come about 2 weeks after the money changes in the bank.
It's normally paid weekly.Moving onto a better place...Ciao :wave:0 -

It's going to be a good couple of weeks yet. I sent mine in on the 3rd, phoned today to check they had received it and was told it only went on their system on the 11th. They are apparently working on sorting out new claims within 3 weeks of the date the received the forms.
I thought it was 3 weeks from when I sent it but was told otherwise today

It depends. My sister has recently put in a new claim and was told upto 3 weeks. She rang a few days after sending the forms back (special delivery not the 2nd class pre paid env) to give accurate, not estimated income for last year and was told that it could take 3 weeks for the claim to onto the system but call back in 1 week.
She called back Tuesday this week and was told an award notice had already been sent out, her claim was on the system and they would update the info and re-send a new awards note. She commented that it was quick as she was expecting 3 weeks and was told when you sned a claim form off they do various 'checks'(not too sure what these are) to validate your claim and as her checks were straightforward it took less time? She has assumed (rightly or wrongly i do not know as i do not claim TC) that once an award notice has been generated payment would be quite soon (infact thats why i ahev logged on tonight to ask for her lol)
Dunno how 'true' the info was or if it was just the advisor passing teh time of day though?
You could always call them.. i know they say 3 weeks but you could just enquire have they got the form and ask for an update?0 -
