New home- energy supplier
Options
Morning all
I’m after a little advice regarding my gas and electricity supply.
I currently live in a flat which only has electricity, no gas (provided by E-ON). My bill is around £70 per month. However next month I am moving home- into a house which has both gas and electricity. I wanted to use an energy comparison site to get the best deal however it’s impossible as I have no way of estimating my gas usage since I am currently only on electricity.
I’m not sure what the best approach is to choosing my supplier as I don’t want to get tied into a new supplier for a year contract if it proves to be the wrong type of tariff. I believe when you move home the energy companies can put you on a a temporary tariff- but as I will be at home a lot during the first month after I move (over Christmas) – I don’t want to get ripped off!
Any advice on the best approach would be much appreciated J
Thanks

Base your comp site research on 16,500 kWh gas and 3,300 kWh electricity-these are average for properties with gas CH and DHW.
You will be with the existing provider on a deemed contract from day one, so take meter readings and register with them on a standard or other non-lock intariff. Once you have done that and have an account, you can commence a switch, which will take 4-5 weeks. No free lunch, and no free laptop0 -
Average usage is 16,500kWh, though if you live alone it can be significantly less. I live alone, and "only" use 8000 kWh a year, if that.
Depending on who the supplier is under the deemed contract, it may be an idea to simply run with them for a while (or ask Eon if they can transfer your tariff and apply gas charges to your new property - bear in mind it will probably take a few weeks for this) and then get an idea of gas usage. From there you can always move (provider) again a few months down the line.0 -

All you have to do is ensure when your calling your new supplier for your new property is give them your opening reads and confirm you want onto a standard tariff with no ties. Then get online with your usage figures find the cheapest tariff and then happy switching (assuming its not the supplier your now with lol).0
