Shutdown during xp Bootup

For quite a while i've had problems during the startup. Recently it forced me to revert back to the factory setting as it just wouldnt get through to windows.
Now i have a firewall, anti virus and XP SP2 it still occurs on the factory restored pc.
During the start up it loads as usual then more often that not it stops, the monitor goes into standby, the ram seems to shut down as no lights come on, the fans still run because i can hear them or something similar but the light on the on button goes off. On some of the startups it asks to run chkdsk and it usually finds a few errors.
Once i can get through the first 5 minutes then its ok and i can use the computer as usual.
I'm not sure if this is either a hardware or software problem and any links or suggestions would be appreciated to narrow down the problem.
It seemed to work ok for a while on this new install, i managed to get xp sp2 a firewall and anti virus onto an external drive so i installed it from there before i unleashed it onto the internet.
I'm on the computer as it usually takes a few attempts before it lets me back on.

I had the same problem on mine so i removed the casing and it was full of dust so i used a gentle airline to blow all the dust out ,and then i removed the ram and refitted it and it has been ok since.0

Their is a slight increase in power usage on start up, a faulty PSU can throw up some really odd problems I had one last week where the PC booted up fine but the monitor wouldnt do anything apart from show a very dark blue screen, I changed the PSU and alls fine now, very strange :rolleyes:0 -
just to help narrow down the problem to either a hardware or software fault, will running hijackthis help determine the problem and how do i go about doing it, thanks0
