Should I reclaim credit from my provider before I switch??

Options
Can somebody please advise me?

I am with EDF and am £111.81 in credit. I have found a better deal with Npower and intend to switch asap (hopefully today in case they pull the voucher deal!).

My question is, do I ring up and request a refund before switching? I'm not quite sure how these things work, so if I don't do that, does the money just get automatically refunded to me? And how long would it take?

I'd be really grateful for some advice please :)

Normally any balance is refunded after the switch is completed.

Requesting a balance to be refunded (at any time) is a completely different matter. You are entitled to ask. The relevant supply regulation says this...

27.16 Where any Credit has accumulated under a Domestic Supply Contract and the relevant Domestic Customer requests that the licensee do so, the licensee must, save where it is fair and reasonable in all the circumstances for the licensee not to do so, refund, in a timely manner, any Credit which has accumulated under that Domestic Supply Contract to the relevant Domestic Customer. Where the licensee considers that it is fair and reasonable in all the circumstances for it not to refund any Credit which has accumulated under a Domestic Supply Contract in accordance with this provision, it must inform the relevant Domestic Customer of its view and of the reasons for holding that view.

In a way that is a long winded "no" except a "no" requires an explanation and Edf is not good at providing explanations.

Good luck, please keep the forum updated with the explanation.:D

Oh, and make sure you understand the implications of NPower "deferred discount".

Do not request £111.81 from EDF now.
Wait until you are on supply with nPower, because EDF will still need to send you a final bill which will probably take a significant chunk out of that credit. Whatever's left after the final bills and statement you can claim back.

Switching takes the best part of 4-6 weeks. The refund of any credit should be automatic, though it often isn't, but it's still your money and you can claim it back.
