How do I know what connection speed I have??

Hi Everyone
I am confused about my connection speed to the internet.
I use a wireless livebox 1378 with Orange as my service provider. When I set it up in November, Orange said that my area would only support speeds of 1 meg and they promised to upgrade my speed automatically as and when the area could support it. Despite this, when I booted up the laptop , my wireless icon in the system tray showed : speed :54.0 Mps. How do these two figures reconcile??
I have just had a problem with my BT line and the engineer has replaced the cable leading to the house. He said that the cable was old and had become worn over time. I am still connecting at 54.0 Mps and I am not sure how to tell if Orange are doing as they promised to upgrade the speed. I have been on Bt's website and they said that I could be getting a maximum of 5 megs depending on quality of wiring etc?
Is there any way to tell?
Thanks for reading and any help
Phil

http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ No downloading of any rubbish you may also want to check for a constant speed by actually downloading a large'ish file to see if the speed is ok try http://www.openoffice.org/ then just delete the file afterwards.0

The 54.0 Mps that you are seeing is the maximum data rate for your wireless connection and has nothing to do with your actual internet connection speed. Try one of the many speed tests to check your speed but it will vary depending on the time of day etc. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0
