Is it a pre pay meter?

With a prepay meter you are putting units on the meter at the cost set on the meter. However, your electricity bill is worked out at the actual cost of the electric being supplied at that point in time. As electricity prices have gone up a lot recently prepay meters should have had the rate put up to compensate. Should he have told you, well it would have been nice, but you should already have had notification of a price increase and expected this alteration. If the actual price increase was a while ago you might get a bill through the post now because your meter has been set too cheaply. It is worth digging out your last bill and checking the meter reading to see if you are up to date with payments.

Check the price for yourself here. Make sure that you look at your region.

Did someone come around to change the rates on your meter after the two increases you know about? The increase on your meter might relate to past price changes by your supplier.

On the subject of whether or not he should have told you about it, it would have been nice, but I imagine meter readers can get a lot of abuse from customers when they have to do this, so I can understand someone being reluctant to mention it.
  • this is a token meter which was in when we moved here and we left it in,would it be better to change to just getting a bill every quarter.

Yes because you will be paying more for your electricity!

As espresso says, most suppliers charge a premium for pre-payment electricity. In the case of Npower, they are the second most expensive pre-payment supplier in my area (after British Gas), charging a whopping £112 per year just in standing charges (compare this with the equivalent of £60 for quarterly billing). Even if you didn't come off prepayment altogether, you would probably benefit from getting off Npower's prepayment tariff.

You shouldn't be charged for changing your meter, i'm with EDF and they changed the old pre-payment meter to a regular one so i get quartly bills with no problems!

But some suppliers do charge. Others refuse to remove them. I have no idea what Npower's stance on the matter is.
