Pet safe pest control

We seem to have a few rats around, what's the best way to deal with them without using traditional poison.
The reason is because the other day one of the dogs was happily chewing a corpse he had found and I worry he may be poisoned himself.
Any suggestions welcome.

    I would have thought a good old fashioned rat trap situated on their run but away from where other animals may wander HTH
