Need to build credit rating, can't get credit card! :(

Options
Hello.

Me and my partner are wanting to get a mortgage sometime in the very near future, he has a spotless credit history its just mine.

I defaulted on a credit card which is now settled, I have no debts, and have slowly started to build my credit rating back to what it was, but i know the best way to do this is to get a credit card, spend a little pay off it full etc etc as it'll build it up faster.

However I've been declined on the poor credit rating credit cards so I was thinking starting off small. Like a store card and go from there because I want to build my credit score up as much as i can, else we'll never get a mortgage!

Can anyone recommend a store card that is likely to accept me? As i don't want to have a wasted search on my file.

Help would be lovely :)) Thanks.

  • How many credit card applications have you done so far?

  • If the bad credit credit card companies won't accept you I wouldn't have thought you'd get a store card (could be wrong). Did you try Vanquis? They were the only ones to accept me.
    Current debts:
    Wonga Loan - £0 :-)
    Vanquis Credit Card - £500 (£500 limit) :(
    Aqua Credit Card - £250 (250 limit) :-(
    NatWest Credit Card - £500 (£500 limit) :(
    NatWest Current account - £-1990 (£2000 overdraft limit) :(
  • I've tried Vanquis- They declined me. I got really downhearted about it, because it advertises that it accepted people who had CCJ's etc, and little old me only had a default :( I've put a £300 overdraft on my account as I've been told that helps with credit ratings. I just don't know what else to do :(

I've done 2 so far, Im hoping 3rd time lucky on a store card, then leave it be for a few months and it'll have grown, and not mattered I've done 3 searches.

jdwilliams they will start you with £125, but after 6 months of no orders they close cra file down
Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.
  • I would be more inclined to say store cards would be harder to get than a bad credit card, especially as you've recently done another 2 searches. Also a lot of searches may end up affecting the mortgage app, making you appear 'credit hungry'.

I would leave it for now

  • Is that guaranteed? And defiantly show on my credit file?
Looks like a catalogue, would one of these be easier for me to get?
  • I understand the leave it concept, I just want to fix it. And hoped that there would be an easier way..

  • Are you on the electoral roll? Your overdraft will now be reported don't use it as it will look good that you never use it. You will need it reporting for a few months. I'd leave it 6 months and try again.
  • Catalogue companies do report to credit reference agencies and they do improve your credit file because Niddy says catalogues are the shortcut to credit cards :)

You need positive payment history on your credit file and catalogues provide this and when you get a credit increase this shows the company is trusting you :)

My wife got declined for Vanquis and after only six months of payments with Simplybe she was accepted for their credit card :)

She applied for Littlewoods catalogue and was turned down and after six months of payments with Simplybe be she applied again to Littlewoods and was accepted with a £400 limit.

So catalogues do help your credit file.
I'm not poor i'm just skint
