they are just taking the pxxs out of you , if your computer has a virus they should be able to remove the (most)virus within 10 minutes, if they cannot the obvious solution is to reinstall the OP which would take around 1 hour.
To treat you in this manor, AND for 5 weeks, is not acceptable.
    They are cheating you

Either it is an hardware problem, or their staff are incompetant
  • Have you tried emailing a complaint to customer.services@pcworld.co.uk? Put it in writing to their customer services department and see if you get any joy from them. Without seeing the Ts&Cs it's impossible to tell if what they're saying is true.

Thanks - they would only give me a postal address for complaints, i thought it would be better to wait until it was fixed before complaining about the service but I'll give them an e-mail straight away.

    10 minutes? Really?

What's this magic speedy virus removal trick? Because without doing a scan to find out what it is, or using HJT to check for any processes that shouldn't be running, or doing a safe boot, you'd have to by pretty psychic to know exactly where a virus was hiding and delete everything associated with it.

I would say a system restore, but they take anything from 30 mins to 2 hours depending on the manufacturer and how much bloatware they install during the factory reset.

I would have thought that is the best way forward just reset the pc to factory settings providing you have an os or back up disc or failing that a new operating system, are you running on Vista by any chance as I had the same issue but manged to get my PC wrote off and replaced by PC world however mine was covered by the business insurance, I know the latest insurance they offer now covers software as well.

Software is definately not normally covered and it is well known for companies to blame problems on.

If they have done 3 system restores, it sounds like it could be a virus elsewhere away from the windows system, prehaps in the computers BIOS and keep rewriting itself after the restore.

Sounds like you are better to let someone prehaps you know who is really knowledgeable about computers look at it. If you get it back and it does the same, maybe try posting in the tech section of this website.

A 2006 Packard Bell and you've been paying 5 years of extra cover, I dread to think how much you have spent on it, probably about 10 x plus what it is worth now. I can only hope for you if they can't fix it, the agreement states you will get a replacement.

To be fair, my mates PC went wrong 3 years into such an agreement with PC World, they took it away, couldn't repair it and he was sent a voucher for £700 (the original price) to buy a new PC all within a couple of weeks, so they do get it right sometimes.

    Hey,

If you can phone up Knowhow and book a Pc Tuneup or go into the store and book a Pc tuneup, you have a piece of spyware (or malware as some people call it) on your system, it tells you, you have so many problems click here to remove them and usually clicking what they say will take you to a website that will either cause more damage or ask for credit card details.

Your Whatever Happens/Coverplan/Pc Performance will cover you for a PcTune Up (though if purchased from a Currys store it's not officially supported or advertised, but any PcWorld or KnowHow bar can book it in.

Not saying the PcTuneup will remove the infection, but it might and if not the KnowHow guys can point you in the right direction.
  • Thanks for all your advice. I've been into store today and the manager has admitted they can't fix it so is getting a write off. Again it's a different story in store to on the phone, but hopefully the problem will be sorted now. We won't be paying for a service agreement again though!

    .
Very unlikely to be written in the Bios (Basic input output system)
The recovery image/disk is where I would start looking for a repeating source of infection.

That's if any work was done at all to start with.
