RAC Car insurance - cover not as quoted.

Hi all,
Just wondering if anyone can help. I purchased car insurance with the RAC, over the telephone, to start from Nov. 6th after initially getting a quote from Compare the market.com.
However, when the documents dropped on the door mat 4 or 5 days later I noticed that the additional driver details and no claims protection cover (which had been entered on the website) was not included. I re entered the information on the website to double check the price before phoning the call centre which resulted in a lengthy discussion whereby they promised to listen back to the previous telephone conversation to check why and if these details were removed and get back to me within 48 hours. (They said they couldn't check my quote as the website referefernce no. was not in a recognisable format). In the meantime they suggested I post them a printout of the original quote, which I did.
Anyway, 3 days latr, i still had not heard from them, so called them up. Didn't get anywhere and was told to phone them again the next day. This time i was told that the complaints department were dealing with it, but they close at 5pm (not helpful to me as I also work 8-5).
So, my main gripe and question to you guys, is that my 14 days cancellation period is up soon and i don't want to be in a postion where i have to pay a 30% fee if i need to cancel because i don't have the cover i paid for! I cannot find out if this will be suspended or not whilst my complaint is dealt with (the guy on the phone said i'd need to speak to complaints). It seems to me that they are using delaying tactics until after the 14 day cooling off period.
Sorry for going on a bit and thanks in advance for any replies.

  • Unfortunately many insurer's specialist departments work office hours and check what the difference in cancellation fees are between inside and outside cooling off as many charge the same
  • OK thanks. RAC cancellation fees are 30% after 14 day cooling off period. Anyway, I phoned them up today to be told that I cannot be put through to complaints and they don't have a telephone number. But they confirmed they have sent out an acknowledgement.

I promptly cancelled the policy and took out cover with Swiftcover instead before they charge me a fortune. Just hope i get my money back promptly.

My advice would be to stay well away from RAC insurance. The call centre are at best clueless.
