How much?...carpenter to put up shelves in alcove

Hi there - we want some shelves put up in our lounge - will need to be made out of timber not ready bought from shop. The type that rest on batons to fill the alcove one side of the fireplace - and a couple on the other side. Would need a carpenter/workman to do it.

Any ideas how much I could expect this to cost? We could do it ourselves but it will take forever...I just want to come home one day and they're up?

Help me work out a budget.

Thanks

Sx

I do't know about Kent, but in the West Midlands a decent carpenter charges around £160 per day for labour.
  • Thanks for that - 'spect that Kent is a bit dearer then?

It is reasonable for one days work - say 7 shelves in total?
  • For any decent DIYer that would be about 3 hours work max.
Shame you are so far away or I could do it for you.

  • Thanks Dub! Know any handy men my way by any chance?

Any Kentish DIY-ers/carpenters/cabinet makers able to advise further or point me in the direction of a recommendation?

    Cheers all!

you'd be better off looking for an odd job man in your local paper will be cheaper than a carpenter.

I agree with david, get some old boy who's semi retired or just wants to suppliment his pension.
I got a quote of a cabinet maker to make a cupboard type thing to hide my electricity meter which is in the corner of the room, and add some shelves to make it into a tall corner unit type of thing.
I got the quote back, and I nearly dropped in a faint, £775.00:eek:

I have recently been looking at building some myself and came across thishttp://www.diydoctor.org.uk/projects/makingshelves.htm

    Nice chunky floating type shelves.
  • That's exactly what we're after headcoat! Neither of us would manage it though - tee hee. I know it's not complicated, just though would spend the cash to get it done sooner rather than later!

We'd get one shelf up per weekend and end up murdering each other!

Thanks all - will get some quotes in a check out handymen.

    Cheers

Two years ago I got 2 different quote for a shelf to be put up in my living room alcove so my hi-fi could live there. When I got the first quote of £75 I thought he was having a laugh, but was shocked when the 2nd guy gave me a quote of around the same price.

This was for Greater London, I'm on the borders of SE London & Kent.

I've never got the shelves done as it's just too much money for just a piece of wood fixed to a wall.
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

Don;t know where you are in Kent but there is some one called medway handyman if you google it comes up. I haven't used them yet but that was actually the job was thinking of getting them in to do.

I think that I might have a go myself first - Invisage woman with power tools!!
