We took it back to H Samuels where we purchased it as when it was sold to us we took out the insurance policy and had been told that a ring resize would be classed as a repair and could get done under it if ever was needed.

Fast forward 10 months, and apparantly the policy has changed and doesn't include that and they want to charge us £42.

    Thanks

Just re-reading this bit back, have you been sent the change in policy information?
Forty and fabulous, well that's what my cards say....

I would have thought it would have been nothing as they're gaining the gold? I understand if you were making it bigger, as gold prices etc for the insert, but surely when they're getting the gold and prices have gone up?

I'm with Jemb on this one =- yesterday I got quoted £50-60 to make my Grandmas' 18c gold ring 3 sizes larger. I would have told them where to stickit to make it smaller - do you get the gold back?! I would go into H samuel and kick up a stink - changing the insurance policy like that.

Congrats to your OH, btw, great weight loss.

I used to work for a shop with the same parent company as H Samuels. They shouldn't have told you that the policy covers resizing as it never has, it is for accidental damage/loss/theft, however the company policy is that rings can be exchanged or resized within (I think) 30 days if it doesn't fit.

They do send their jewellery off premesis for repairs/alterations, however this is usually to a local sub-contracted company rather than to a HQ somewhere, and so the timescales vary from store to store (the store I worked in was 3-5 days depending on the time of year, however we used to quote 5-7 days to customers just to be on the safe side)

Out of interest, what style is the ring? Three sizes is a pretty big jump and some ring styles just won't resize without putting the stone at risk.

I asked in an independent shop last week, as i would like my engagement ring made a size smaller and the price I was given was £44, so the independent shops aren't necessarily cheaper.

This may be the case, but if it cost the same as a big chain store, I would support the independent jeweller every time :)

  • I can't comment on the big names like H Samuels but, I used an independent pawn brokers to buy my engagement ring and needed it resizing. They didn't do it themselves but whoever they used did a rubbish job! (unfortunately closed down so can't take it back) So be careful who you go to.

    That's terrible.

I guess that we're lucky - the jeweller that we went to for my engagement and wedding rings is very very reputable and has been in business for 50 years, great word of mouth etc. That reassured us a lot.
