Paypal Issues/Alternative

Hey all,

I'm in the process of trying to build my own online business, sadly I know next to nothing about anything so it's taking a while.

I've been using PayPal to receive my wages however they recently closed my account because I earned X amount and now they want proof that I'm not laundering money. Several emails and 2 hours of telephone calls later, they asked for my birth certificate which they then said wasn't valid. The only thing they accept is a Passport, which I don't have and can't afford to get at the moment.

This means I have no way of getting paid for the work I do online and my advertisers from my website have no PayPal account to pay into, is anyone aware of any fair alternatives or anything I can do? I'm trying to find the quickest solution possible as it's my only form of income at the moment.

Any advice/help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I've not got a driving license either, no official identification at all other than my Birth Certificate. Are PayPal users able to send money to NoChex? That has been my main problem so far, none of the alternatives can receive money from PayPal, which is what every company I work for seems to use.
  • Unfortunatly not Nochex can only take payment of either no chex users or straight forward debit/credit card payment on your behalf.

if your working for the same people all the time get them to pay via BACS, you set the payment terms not your customers.

You could set up a proper merchant account and accept credit/debit cards directly as an alternative.

I can only assume Paypoo won't accept your birth certificate because it is only the short one.
Try setting-up a new Paypal account. Only this time, make it a business one instead of a personal one. I set one up for a local shop keeper when we started on his new website and he has yet to be asked for any documentation. We did the Bank Account verification bit and 6 months on, still no issues.
    Never Knowingly Understood.

Unfortunately, birth certificates are not valid identification as anyone can obtain a birth certificate if they wish for anyone in the UK they choose to obtain one for. Paypal are quite right to refuse this as proof of ID.

I'm not a fan of Paypal, but have to say they are probably right in this instance.

following this terrible advice would be very risky. Whilst the person in this instance hasn't YET been asked for ID they could be at anytime, which could end up with their account being frozen until they receive the correct ID which in the OPs case would result in them being exactly where they are now!!

OP have you phoned paypal, they are far easier to deal with over the phone then they are via email. You need to sort the correct ID out, its not paypals fault if you don't have the accepted identification.

  • We had huge problems getting an online payment system, you could try Moneybookers, Nochex, 2CO or GoogleCheckout.

I find it absurd that UK banks don't want to provide a simple to access service to take money.

OP I know you say you can't afford a passport at the moment and are in a bit of a Catch 22 situation as you now can't get paid but if there is any way you can get the cash together I would suggest getting the passport. I begrudge the charge as I only use my passport as an ID card not for travelling at the moment but I just have to bite my lip and get on with it.

Without photo ID you may struggle to grow your business and the thing is there may be a time when you need a service - FAST! - and are then stuffed. You will struggle to get a business bank account without photo ID, a solicitor, a credit card terminal etc. I keep my passport in my business safe as there is a couple of times I've needed to grab it in a hurry to satisfy ID requirements when signing up for business services.
