Plagiarism is practically a hanging offence.
    Do not take it lightly.

Follow academic conventions at all times ... in a nutshell:

If it is a direct quote, word for word, wrap it in quotation marks and attribute the source.

If it is a paraphrase, i.e. not word for word - or anything too close, attribute at the end and again and again, if necessary.

You must distinguish between your ideas and those of others. If you're at all unsure, check and keep checking. It's a serious matter.

    That is good advice.

No one ever tells you these things when you start your course. It is one of the aprior things the university expects you to know for some reason.

When I was at university I spent a few weeks at the end of the 1st summer term writing a long essay about nuclear fusion. It was pretty interesting actually. I borrowed 12 books on it and read them. I do remember sitting there and pretty much just rewriting some of the sentences to use in my own work. Mixing up the words and style into my own. That was a bit lazy, but the overall piece was my own work.
