Wireless USB Dongles

My Desktop has a very dated wi-fi dongle that has a poor reception and I am thinking it is time to replace it.

The majority of USB wireless dongles are cheap (around £5-£10), but they all offer the same spec and range (300 Metres). Not being too clued up on them, I was wondering if anyone can shed some light on them, whether or not there are better specs or ranges availablle,

I am not too fussed on the price range as yet, but I am looking for a decent\fast enough USB wifi dongle to replace my out dated one on my desktop.

Are all wireless dongles pretty much basic specs, or are there better ones available??

Its so I can wirelessly access my Internet on my Desktop, It is situated behind the television where it's primary use is for streaming movies and\or playing pc games.

Both laptops and netbook are wireless and have no issue hooking them online via my Virgin router, my existing dongle on the desktop does work, but is very slow due to its age.

I have an N router (TP Link) and 2X TP Link N USB dongles which replaced a D LINK G set up. The PCs they are attached to are furthest away and through walls (linearly) rather than perpendicular. It has made a resilience and performance much better.

I also have an older Netgear G USB which is in an adjacent room with no problems.

G runs at 54mbs fastest and N 300 mbs both constrained by you BB speed to your house. N also gives you bigger range/signal strength.

The G and N in my case give similar performance now which is usually quick. This wasn't the case for the more remote "Gs" which were slow and unreliable being swamped by a neighbours BT Home hub in the end.

A given spec G or N should operate the same regardless of make.

I have found the TP link dongles very good about £8 of Amazon.
