Hi there, looking for some advice from anyone that knows more than me about boilers - that'll be all of you :A
Just moved into our new house and we have a Potterton Boiler with a hot water tank upstairs. I called Potterton and gave them the serial number and they said it dates back to 29/01/1993. Is it worth renewing my homecare agreement? LOL! I have a terrible feeling I'm going to get them out and they are going to tell me it needs replacing. Seems to work OK though and the previous owner had it serviced every year from someone local.
Many thanks for any help!

Floor standing KingFisher II?
You are making me feel guilty about the two I replaced last year.
They were both working perfectly! Damn the £400 Boiler Scrappage scheme.
If you can find somebody to keep it going, count on 30 years of service life. My plumber refused to service one of them at roughly 25 years old: it then soldiered on for another five years, without even the pilot flame going out, and without a service.0 -
I have a 20+ year old "vintage" Potterton Profile and it's still going. When I bought my place nearly 13 years ago, the gas guy (local) I had in to service it told me that it would last for many more years, and it has
I have it serviced every year and I'm planning on keeping it until it completely dies.
edit: the only work required so far (fingers crossed!) on the whole system has been new diverter valves, that's it... Oh and the pump got really noisy after many months of not being used, bled it (in case it was an air lock) and gave it few whacks (in case it was sludge stuck) and it's been behaving fine sinceNow free from the incompetence of vodafail0 -
Thanks for the replies. It's not a floorstanding Kingfishes (unless that's what the water tank thingmy in the cupboard upstairs is) but it's in the kitchen in one of the cupboards. It has been serviced by a local guy for years by the looks of it. I'm wondering if I should just cancel my British Gas homecare and stick with the local dude.
Good to hear that these things soldier on as I can't afford a new boiler system right now!
Many thanks0 -
i have just had my 35 year old back boiler removed and replaced with a worcester bosch 30CDi combi !!
I must say even though the old boiler worked and was 35 years old , ,the new boiler heats the rads up within 10 mins easily, and automatically adjusts the burner flame to maintain the required temp
The old boiler took 1 hours to heat rads up, running flat out !!!! ,
Even though i loved my old back boiler the new boiler seems far far more controllable and much more efficient !!
I also notice a £20 drop in montly usage even though my new boiler boiler has been running the rads , where as the old boiler was not in the summer !!!
i dont think the new boiler willlast as long the old back boiler though !!!0 -
You run a considerable risk of paying BG, and when you call them out they will tell you the boiler is too old to be repaired or the parts are obsolete. At several hundred quid a year, I'd say keep the money in your pocket and keep using the bloke that has proven himself.0

If you can afford a new boiler then I would get one. We have just moved in to a new house, the 11 year old boiler that's in broke down last week, could of fixed it for 200 but thought its getting old and seems we have just moved it makes sence to get a new one now and get are moneys worth out of it.
It's a viessmann and should be finished tomorrow, comes with 5 year parts & labour waranty, also supposed to save you about 150 a year in gas bills.0 -
My boiler is 21 years old, got serviced last week, hoping it stays good for long tim yet0

My boiler is a Glow worm spacesaver 50 CF at around 30 years old. It is range rate down to around 38,000Btu/hr and provides plenty of heating and a nice big tank of hot water. total monthly DD for gas and electric is £45. There is much to be said for older boilers.
I also dont pay any insurance because i dont need it.Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..0
