Multi Bank Claim ?

Hi I would be very grateful for your help and advice, this is my first attempt at posting a thread and my first time on this site. I have a number of questions/comments which I will try and put in a nutshell.
Firstly during the last 10 years I have had 3 bank accounts one each with Barclays, Abbey and Nationwide. The first two accounts closed appx 5 years ago. Am I still able to make a claim against Barclays and Abbey? i.e. if these accounts were closed in 2002 can I claim back to 1996? I still have my bank account details. Both these banks placed very heavy charges on my account at a time when my ex-husbands business was failing and I was trying to support my family on my salary alone.
Secondly - My only account now is with Nationwide. As a single parent I am struggling to survive, having been off work ill for a year, my employer recently reduced my salary to half pay. I am more or less destitute, and wrote the the Nationwide setting out my dire circumstances in the hope that they would waive £90 charges incurred last month. I was extremley disappointed to receive the standard letter back...'Our charges are clearly set out' etc etc. I had advised them that because of these charges I would not be able to pay my electricity bill (amongst others) The same has happened again this month, leaving me with the grand total of £87 to last me until next pay day (25th). I therefore sent them the initial letter that I had seen on 'Which' (as I did not know about this site). Unfortunately I did not send £10! Should I now re-send this letter again with £10. I have noted my initial letter in my diary and the 40 days will be up in March. This account is just an account, I have not been given an overdraft facility or a debit card. Also because of my financial situation I am worried that I will not be able to set up a new bank account, can anyone therefore recommend a bank that will take me on as a customer (sadly during my marriage I incurred CCJ's one of which was to Barclays Bank).
My apologies to all for hitting you with all these questions, but I do hope you will be able to offer me advice. Many thanks Suzigee

No, you can only claim back 6 years in England and Wales

Phone the bank and ask them if they require the £10, some bank are returning the cheques or charging less.

Nationwide WILL close your account if you claim charges back from them, that is the bad news. On the good side, they are one of the easiest to get money back from. You will need to issue a court claim but soon after they will pay you back.
They also do require the £10 otherwise they will not send the statements.
Try Co-Op or Citibank to get an account, both should be fine for you.0
