Cancelling BT services after the renewal date

I moved house just over a month ago, but as I was moving between flatshares, and the old place has friends of mine still living there, I have been a bit tardy in cancelling bills etc
Called up BT today, to cancel the contract, and they told me that i was tied into a free evening/weekend plan contract that renewed on 14th October, and therefore i have to pay £33 to exit the contract. This contract has been renewing for the past 3 years, which i have been happy with, but i did not receive any letter warning me of upcoming renewal and I cannot transfer the contract as I have moved into another flatshare with an existing (BT) landline. I was informed by a rather rude man that there was nothing I could do but pay, and that I had benefited from 3 years of low cost service (as if that had any bearing on the issue..)
Perhaps £33 does not sound like much to some, but it is for me, and it is frustrating to have to pay it considering I have been (and will continue to be) a loyal customer. I plan to lodge a complaint with BT (Not least because of the way my call was handled), but if anyone has got any advice or past experience with this, I would much appreciate it.
Thanks!!

If you are in an auto-renewing contract then yes, the charge is valid.
Is it wise to leave services open for others to use after your departure for which you will still be billed? No free lunch, and no free laptop

Oh yeah, like i said, they're all friends..
Is there anyway around this do you know? Am especially frustrated by the lack of reminders!0 -
No. It a common complaint on here. They do claim to send reminders via post or email/to your online account, but they're not contractually obliged to do so. It's up to you to opt out of auto-renewal before the cut off date.No free lunch, and no free laptop

If it is a Auto-Renewal, You have nothing to do about. Before going for any comlaints check if you have received any Notification through mail which you might have missed.
You might have even changed your Email Address which you have used before 3 years while taking the BT Connection.0 -
Ahh well, thanks anyway. May just see if i can transfer the contract in some way.0

But any transfer will start you on a new 12m contract. No free lunch, and no free laptop
