website traffic help

I am going to build a web site and the domain i want is available.

At first i was going to buy the domain an hosting at 123-reg but i have found both to be cheaper at dataflame.

My main question is how can i make my site come high up in search engines? I was going to purchase the instant traffic that 123-reg sell but can u purchase this if your site is hosted elsewhere?

I understand about having links to my site on others etc but i would just like some tips on search engines.

Also do people have any experience with dataflame?

thanks :)

  • At the end of the day, if your site is useful it will get used a lot.

Make sure u use "search tags" in you meta information in your webpages, that will allow search bots to catagorise your site more usefully.

Out of interest what is your site about? Sometimes you can link to other intrest sites or "network" of sites. Post your site on wikipedia. Advertise locally. Pay google to advertise your site.
  • thanks for the tips.

My site is going to be about rock climbing as it is my hobby but i wanted to get it noticed.

also i have spotted godaddy have the domain i want for 1.99 rather than 6.99 at dataflame. could i purchase this from godaddy and have my site hosted at dataflame. what would i need to do to get this to work?

Yes, just need to point the dns at the host you want to use - they should have a howto on how to do it. For traffic/high on searching you need links, not that many really thats how people get things like searching for idiot and getting george bush to come top - it needs relatively few links.
  • Search Engine optimisation (how to get higher up the list of a search engine results) is a black art, and is something you need to review on a regular basis. Mainly you need to ensure that your site contains correct HTML, conforms to most of the basic accessibility guidelines (especially the ones about alt text for images etc), use repeatable phrases especially the sort of phrase that people might put into the search engine, also include these within your metatags. You can submit your site map to google to improve your google ranking. Also get other people to link to your site.

There's plenty of articles online if you google for "Search Engine Optimisation".

I've searched around on google but cannot find out how to do this, the only things I have found are links to hosting companies who say they'll do it for you, but I would like to know myself.

    Any ideas???
