Item lost in post

I sold a bottle of perfume and posted it out recorded. I then got filed with an item not received. I refunded the same day as the case was opened. The buyer has 5000 + feedback. The recorded tracking didn't show as tracked so I phoned the buyers delivery office and they said it had been delivered but the tracking hadn't been updated. I emailed the buyer 3 times over the last 4 weeks asking very politely if she had the item and she didn't reply. I put in a claim from Royal Mail with the original receipt the ebay sale and the ebay refund and the cost of the postage. The letter came today from Royal Mail saying basically tough -perfume and aftershave are not insured for postage and they won't pay out. I packaged it really well and still think I have been done.

Did the tracking ever update to delivered? If it has maybe you can go back through paypal with proof, I don't know whether they will do anything or not but it may be worth a try.
    From RM site,
Any perfumes or aftershaves that are non-flammable are permitted. Some flammable perfumes and aftershaves are permitted via our Royal Mail Tracked service – restrictions apply. Please see https://www.royalmail.com/tracked. Those that are flammable are prohibited via all other Royal Mail services.
I don't know how you can find out whether the one you sent was flammable.

The tracking never did update which is why I put in a claim. Have just phoned the customer services at Royal mail and they said they do not refund for perfumes or aftershaves and wouldn't even refund the postage costs so I am out of pocket with that as well. May have to find a courier that is available up here for the other items I am selling. This is only the second item I have ever lost - the first was last winter in all the snow. It was the fact the seller didn't reply to any emails that made me feel she was just trying it on.

I'm afraid I can't remember exactly where I found this, but it was from googling when I wanted to post perfume. Lots of non-ebay businesses send out perfume by Royal Mail. I'm starting to feel gloomy about the perfume I posted to Sweden, apparently lost.

"Only a small minority of perfumes are classified as Dangerous Goods (the aerosol type which uses a gas and a few old style ones with high levels of alcohol used as the carrier). To be classified as a Flammable Liquid/Dangeous Good the perfume would have to have a flashpoint below 61C. Not many perfumes are Dangerous Goods nowadays as its not a good selling point "here squirt this flammable liquid behind your ear". The solvent carriers have been specifically made to be non flammable to avoid the air transport premiums that used to apply to the old style flammable perfumes."
