Womder if this childs seat has ever been involved in an accident...?!

I'm actually shocked at this one...

This guy is selling car parts as he is obviously a breakers yard (I was looking for some Corsa parts)

Anyway, I had a look at his other items and found, quite worryingly this:

Hard to tell, it maybe his own, maybe out of light accident damaged car or a major accident damaged car. Personally I would NEVER buy a used childs car seat as you will never really know the history of it so why take the risk. They have come down so much in price that there really is no excuse not to buy new. Not very environmentally friendly I agree but I suspect they can be recycled as most are just plastic with metal bits.
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.
  • Same goes for crash helmets. Never buy second hand as you will never know the history.

Stuff like that for kids (as im sure many of us know) has reached a point where it's all about brand name over safety/cost.....
For the "Mufia" (mommy maf1a) It's all about "fashion", it's all about having a brand label, being able to show off to other parents. So yes, I do believe some people would buy potentially damaged goods, if the brand label was desirable.

Agree strider - our last car seats were brand new and cost £30 because they aren't well known in the UK.

I'd never heard of them so was hesitant, but a quick google revealed they are part of a much larger group with a known UK brand who knock out similar car seats at over £100 each.

When new seats are available at £30, £20 for a used one with an unknown history makes no sense.

You must really move in the wrong circles. I don't know anyone that would. I know a lot of people that buy brands, but they buy the seat that fits their car first.

(Britax isn't a fashion item, mama and papas maybe, for future reference for you)

You have clearly never been to a car boot then or looked on ebay or gumtree or even freecycle where people are picking up used car seats all the time whilst never really knowing its true history.

Most of the used items being sold are brand names like quinny etc and people are buying them because they are saving a few quid but without knowing the car seats full history your playing russian roulette with your own childs life. If people can live with that then fine its their decision, personally I would NEVER risk it.

    You're right, I haven't.
Actually, I've never seen any at car boot sales, so you're partly right.
But I don't know anyone that has ever used a second hand seat, unless it's passed down through the family.
  • I was told by mothercare last week that they recommend a new car seat for each child because there might be harmful bacteria in the old one - like mattresses. Is this them being over zealous or is this actually recommended?!? A friend of mine is having twins so I said I was going to lend her my infant carrier so she didn't have to buy one and the sales assistant reacted like I'd proposed infanticide!

    she's a loony
Remembering when we were kids and we'd all pile into the big old pram that the whole family shared, we slept in drawers, we ate mud, we drank milk with no date on - there was no such thing as germs in them days ;)

Don't know about the seats, but there's certainly harmful bacteria in my kids, but saying as they used to throw up all over each each in the back of the car, or throw up out of the front window when the one in the back had her window open, I could live with the risk.
I think the mattress theory was in reaction to cot death, so a totally different reason.
