Pc/laptop help for beginners pls

Bear with me...... could anyone explain a few things to me in simple terms without laughing please and possibly give some recommendations?

I am about to start a degree with the Open University and would like to use a laptop for word processing assignments when I am on the move (caravan etc). I have a fully functioning pc at home and do not need the laptop to access the internet, however I would like to transfer my assignments to my pc when I am at home - how do I do this? Do I use a disk, cd or what the heck are these things that you just plug in then remove when you are done?

Also does anyone have a recommendation for a basic laptop that would suit my needs, I haven't got a huge budget (actually I haven't even thought of a budget yet!).

Thanks in anticipation

Maths - yuck! I'm going to break myself in nice and gently and study for a Certificate in Business Studies this year. I'm aiming for the degree but am sceptical about whether I've got it in me anymore. I left the education system at 18, worked in the NHS for a couple of years and am looking after my young family at home at the moment. If I don't try I'll never know.

Many thanks for the advice given Millwalll and Jason 123, it makes sense when it's explained.
