Any Avira problems?

I'm seriously considering moving back to Avast.
Win7 Home Premium 64 bit, 4GB ram BTW.
I'm a long time user of Avira and have never had a problem with it, until this week.
Sunday at around 10.00pm it updated and everything came to a halt for around 15mins.
Palemoon was showing 'not responding', Thunderbird wouldn't run. Task manager started up after about a minute, usually a few seconds, and showed CPU 1% and Physical Memory 27%.
The Avira umbrella was closed and the program wouldn't open.
Last evening, I was on Ubuntu, so no problem.
10.00pm this evening, exactly the same, everything a complete standstill, again umbrella closed. I walked away and 40mins later it was still the same, eventually I managed to shut down after getting the 'do you want to force shutdown' message, it still took 5 mins to shut down, usually about 10 secs.
Along with the nagging about WebGuard, the ASK toolbar, I've avoided both, and the tie-in with the dreaded Uniblue, I'm considering jumping ship.
The tricks to avoid the popup advert no longer seem to work/get remembered.
I'll probably uninstall/run CCleaner then reinstall and give it one more go.
Has anyone else run into problems lately?
Mini rant over.

Gave up on it long ago for those reasons amongst others, palemoon was a bit buggy too, hogging cpu frequently.!!

As I said, I've never had a problem with it, even in the past when others were having trouble getting updates. The ads used to be easily by-passed.
Palemoon has been fine, and it's too much of a coincidence that it's Palemoon causing the slow down just as Avira updates.debitcardmayhem wrote: »Hi spud, I only use it on a VM get yourself NIS 2012...£25 3 pcs.....OK I'll get me coat :rotfl::rotfl:;)
That means I'll have to buy 2 more PCs.
Or does it run on SliTaz?
That little beauty is running just fine,24/7, thanks for asking.Move along, nothing to see.0 -
No problems as such that I know about with Avira, but the new pop-ups are getting really annoying and there is no way to turn them off
The nag screen I don't mind as it's a confidence measure that Avira is updating.
Edit Avira isn't getting in the way of Ccleaner.
Might switch to Avast if things don't improve.

no problems this end - free version on my desktop, no probs at all (except the pop-ups
). Free trial of full suite on this lappy, again no probs. Possible software conflict after something else has been updated ???
......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple0 -

Do you mean a conflict between CCleaner and Avira? I tend to use hibernate most days and CCleaner runs on startup with a fresh boot, never any sign of a problem.no problems this end - free version on my desktop, no probs at all (except the pop-ups). Which OS?
As to a conflict, this happened for the first time on Sunday night, and nothing else would have been updated for several days.Move along, nothing to see.0 -

Cheers GunJack, guessed it was XP, 'cos my retired one always ran/runs perfectly with Avira.
Anyway, read on.
I've had a chance to check out a couple of things, the Win7 'Action Center' said 'Desktop protection was turned off' and 'Check Antispyware'.
The Avira 'Start' page had a message about 'Realtime Protection was turned off', i.e the umbrella should have been closed, but was in fact open. Also the right click option to enable/disable 'Realtime protection' was greyed out.
Thinking back to Sunday when this first happened, I had a scheduled SyncBack profile start at about the same time as Avira updated. My guess is that this time, somehow some things got tangled up (new techie term).
Anyway, I've unistalled Avira using Revo Uninstaller at max settings, run the CCleaner registry tool and reinstalled Avira and it seems to be back to normal. Twicw now it's updated in a few seconds with no sign of the PC slowing to a halt.
Except for the increasingly intrusive adverts. :mad:Move along, nothing to see.0 -

this is just one of the reasons the ONLY thing on my machines that auto-updates is the av. Everything else I choose when to do them in order to avoid such conflicts happening, and it's scary the number of vista machines I've had to rebuild for people who've powered off manually 'coz they've thought the pc wasn't responding - vista in the middle of updates + power off the pc = quite often non-bootable machine......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
