Movie Converter software

Hi,
can anyone recommend a good simple FREE programme for converting all formats of movies to watch on an ipad.
i am asking for a friend, i dont have the ipad, but he has a windows based laptop with itunes.. he was hoping to convert the files that he has on there, and some dvd's, to ipad compatible files and then just drag them over to itunes or whatever. .

there are a few that i have found, but i dont know which ones are the best. i have had problems with 2 i used in the past.. and the rest cost money.... dont want to pay any money if possible .

what you need is easy,a special ipad video converter is fine.you can download one on big download site,such as cnet.
