Average cost of gas and electric for 3 bed house

Hi all

After a bit of advice from everyone.

When i moved into the property the pay as you go meters were with e-on, i have now switched over to souther electric and am feeling it a bit cost wise.

Minimum i can put on electric is £20 i get paid on a thursday and put either £20 or £25 on if i have gone into my emergancy credit. electric £25 thursday 10th nov 6pm

Gas again was e-on swithched to southern electric. now se owed me money from my previous pre pay meter being in credit £34.00 i put £5 on too so £39 total gas and i was not in my emergncy credit. the gas went on on 13th october.

As of now i have £5.95 electric (and unused emergancy)
And £2.66 gas (and unused emergancy)

Would people consider this expensive and should i consider direct debits or such and come off the pre-payment meter, the only reason i use pre pay is it better suits my budget, just not my pocket.

The house is 3 bed, gas central heating that had been set up on a timer to come on in the morning for when the kids get up ages 5 and 6 for about an hour, when the kids get home from school for about an hour, and a few hours in the evening for before the kids go to bed. the loft insulation is non exsistant, the fromt of the house is double glazed, the back is single glazed and the bathroom window is broken i know this lets out heat and in cold and when the weather was rough a few weeks back you could hear the wind and the blind over the window was moving :)

Must admit electric and gas tarrifs baffle me so any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

    From the tone of your post I guess that you moved into this house fairly recently, and with the PAYG meters, that it is rented.

    Owned or rented, with broken/single glazed windows and lack of decent loft insulation this house is going to be a money pit so far as Gas & Elec bills are concerned, no matter what company you are with

    If it is rented the best advice is to move on as soon as the lease expires.
    If it's owned then get the Glazing and Loft Insulation sorted as fast as you can

    Thanks for your reply, yes only moved in recently, i have applied for loft and cavity wall insulation and am going to speak to the landlord about the broken window.

    Can't you just board the broken window up temporarily-10 mins work with a bit of hardboard?

    To answer your original question, my understanding is that pre-payment meters are expensive and that you would be better off with a direct debit online tarriff.

    If you go to the relevant section of this website it explains how to switch. Are you allowed to move away from the pre-payment meters?
