Laptop not starting up...

I have a Toshiba Equium, running Windows 7. It must be about four or five years old now. When I press the button to start it up the on light comes on but quite often nothing else will happen. Can anybody suggest what might be the matter...?
Having held the on button down to switch it off, I have another go. Often on the third or fourth go I will hear the fans turn on then it will come to life. When it is running it works perfectly.
I have run a Chkdsk scan which seemed to be fine but can't really think of what other diagnostics I could run or what other problem it might be. If it were the hard drive I would have thought that it would manifest itself while the laptop was running as well; if it were the RAM I would have thought that it would either work or not work. It seems strange that sometimes it will start fine (booting straight into Windows) and sometimes it won't... What can I do please?!

Mmm...I hadn't thought of that. I did actually have a problem with the battery about a month ago (the computer was saying that the battery was uncharged even though it was plugged in) so I took the battery out then.
I don't think the problem started at the same time as I took the battery out. Anyway, the light does come on to show that it is on when I press the button even though nothing else is happening...0 -
Does anybody have any other ideas please...?0
