Stockport railway station Ticket office closed?

It seems bizarre that at Stockport railway station today at 7.50 pm there was notice saying "ticket office closed, sorry for inconvenience” and yet at the corner approaching the platform a young gentleman (accompanied by a lady) sat at the table selling tickets using some sort of machine.
