Barclaycard error affecting former Egg customers

Hello all,

I've just had an interesting conversation with Barclaycard customer services.

I had been charged interest on my first Barclaycard statement as a former egg customer, despite paying all balances in full.

The person on the phone told me that due to an 'error' they had no records of payments from any egg customers so had assumed everyone had made minimum payments and charged interest accordingly. They promptly refunded (or at least told me I will have a refund within 2 days!) the interest charged.

I can't help wondering how many former-egg customers will not notice this charge, so I urge all new barclaycard account holders to check their statements carefully.

I'm surprised this hasn't been mentioned elsewhere on the forums (that I could find), but if the details I've been given are true this must affect thousands of people and needs a wider audience!

My last payment is correctly recorded on 1st November, and no interest showing on the statement created on 11th November. So it's not universal.

Only thing they've got wrong on mine so far is the Cashback amount. Still waiting for that to be rectified.

My new card was not showing up in my old Barclaycard account. So I sent them a message. The agent misread it as I had not received my card - card was cancelled.

They sent me out a new one, gave me £20 good will. But not my cashback is not showing on the new card account. It was showing on the old one, even if I think it was about £5 short of where it should have been.

Hopefully they will fix it soon. This drama only started on Saturday, new card came today and current transactions on new card just showed up in the online account today.

There is a thread set up here to discuss Egg to Barclaycard transfer problems. See my entry.

I have had the same call from Barclaycard, did they offer you a months free interest free as well?

Same with me. I sent them a secure message, but they couldn't be bothered to read it and just replied that the cashback terms are the same as they were with Egg!

If they really had no record of your payment, that should have made a big difference to your outstanding balance - I'd have thought the interest would be the least of your problems.
"It will take, five, 10, 15 years to get back to where we need to be. But it's no longer the individual banks that are in the wrong, it's the banking industry as a whole." - Steven Cooper, head of personal and business banking at Barclays, talking to Martin Lewis
  • No real probs with my transfer. My direct debit to Egg clearing my entire balance went through during the "transactions made during 4-6 Nov may not initially show" period - so it was no real surprise that it appeared to be missing at Barclaycard and my whole balance was still 'outstanding'!

Wasn't bothered as I had my bank info to prove it was transferred to Egg. It popped up after a couple of days on my Barclay statement and no interest charged.

I don't quite see how anyone could "miss" the fact that they may be charged interest that shouldn't be due, sorry to lecture, but it's your responsibility to check off your receipts against your statement. Even on-line purchases (where I don't necessarily want to print the receipt myself), I write the basic details on a piece of paper and add it to my outstanding receipt pile. If you aren't very careful with your own money, who else is going to be? Certainly not a massive financial organisation that's for sure!

My transferred cashback isn't quite correct, I just can't quite figure out why the running total doesn't include the amount due for the bill I've just paid - but it'll all come out in the wash and I will get it (no phone calls, everything done in writing).

Frankly, if I were being charged interest that I shouldn't be, and they couldn't refund it immediately, I'd be asking for an ex gratia payment as an apology. I've done it several times (in writing and in person at the bank), never failed yet.
Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.
  • I've had a "standard" e-mail today about interest:

We've noticed that you have been charged an amount of interest on your first Barclaycard statement in error and wanted to make you aware that we have refunded this to your account.

The issue has arisen following the transfer of Egg accounts to Barclaycard. Nevertheless, the interest should not have been applied and I can confirm that the amount has been credited to your Barclaycard account by our Customer Service department. This credit will appear on your forthcoming statement and the adjustment will be shown when you review your account online. As a result there is no need for you to take any further action.

We're sorry that this has happened and apologise for any inconvenience caused.

But I'd already noticed and been on to them about it, so I've now had a double refund so now I owe them money. I've e-mailed them about this on Monday, no response yet. I'll give them until tomorrow before I formally complain.
