Can a boiler be in a bedroom?

At the moment the boiler is on the wall in what is currently the kitchen. However, my long term plan was to move the kitchen into an adjoining room (maybe) but leave the boiler where it is. Someone has made an "off the cuff" remark today that they don't think this is allowed...?? Does anyone know? And as the boiler is about 15 years old & therefore likely to need replacing in the next couple of years, would it cost a lot more at that time to then move it to a different room - and is that very complicated..? Thanks!!!

  • We replaced an old boiler with a combi one, and all I can remember is that the new one had to be on an outside wall and a certain didtance from windows. The old one was on an internal door.

I don't know why a boiler wouldn't be allowed in a bedroom, as long as it complied with the outside wall and window regulations.

I believe it is allowed but ask your self ... would you want your self or kids to sleep in a room with a machine chucking out CO2 ..... its one thing being in the same hosue as it its another thing spending 8 hours a night asleep next to it.

Im not saying its not safe if the boiler is safe but id rather not do it personnaly.
If it doesnt pay rent sell it.

  • Yes it is allowed.
I have my new boiler in an upstairs bedroom after having a loft conversion 3 years ago.
It is on an outside wall with a small door in front which must be vented.
You would never know the boiler was in the room.

I have to agree here, i'm no expert with the regs for Boiler installation, but i have worked in a lot of properties and i don't recall ever seeing a boiler in a bedroom.

I have seen loads of boiler's in bedrooms lately as I am looking to buy a new house, and one thing that puts me off is a boiler in a bedroom. I would never put my children in a bedroom with a boiler and don't understand people who get there boiler fitted in the bedroom. The other thing to consider is, as the boiler get older it will get noisey, so every time you turn the hot water on the boiler will kick in.

We live in a council property and recently have had many upgrades done, one of which is the heating.

We used to have a back boiler behind the gas fire which heated the water and downstairs radiators (didnt have upstairs one only in the bathroom). Now they have taken out the back boiler and replaced it with a new combi bolier (think thats what they are called) also put radiators in all the bedrooms and the boiler is in the airing cupboard in our bedroom. Have to say though it can be rather noisy when firing up or whatever its doing. All i know is that it had to be placed on an outside wall and also it has to go into a drainage gutter.

Rather annoying though as its taken up much of my airing cupboard space and now i dont have anywhere for all my Boots bargains from the grabbit thread  Sure i can find nooks and crannies elsehwere though ;)

Our old boiler is in the kitchen and it is so bloody noisy. It makes the sound like an aeroplane landing in the kitchen! It keeps me up all night (my bedroom is next to the kitchen)

The house I'm moving to (ex-council) is in one of the bedrooms in the corner and has had a door and walls constructed of MDF surrounding it and it makes a faint humming noise (I'm still going to sleep in the other room though! ;) )
  • Hi

Yes you can fit a boiler in a bedroom as long as it is 'room sealed'.That means it takes its air for combustion directly from out side and the flue exhausts directly to out side.
Noise is a possible problem and depends on the make and type of boiler.

I dread to think what it would be like in the bedroom!!!

I heard somewhere a few weeks ago about a child dying of CO2 poisoning from a faulty boiler in her room (I think it was on the Jeremy Vine program on R2). A friend of mine had a boiler installed in the bathroom because they didn't want to take up a cupboard space in the tiny kitchen, ours in in the garage.
