Ipad: 64GB first-generation, or 32GB second-generation?

Hi all,

OK, it looks as if we're getting a "family" Ipad for christmas this year. Having done some sums and research, it looks as if the budget (around £400-ish) will stretch to either a 32GB Ipad 2, or a refurbished 64GB Ipad 1.

We're looking to put quite a bit of music on it, and the odd movie here and here for holidays and car journeys, etc.

My main question is: how much better is the Ipad 2?

More specifically, is the camera really worth it? Is the processor that much better? Or should I go with the older one and take the extra memory for music and films etc?

Any practical advice gratefully received.

<Not interested in arguments between fanboys and haters, thanks.>

I had an iPad 1, when the iPad 2 was released I sold the iPad 1 to a relative and got an iPad 2.

I've used 45GB of storage just on apps.

From a very quick look at iTunes, the films are about 1.5GB each. But you don't need them all installed/downloaded at once, you can sync them to your PC and just copy a few over for each journey/holiday.

Individual songs are something like <10MB each so you'll have space for thousands whichever one you choose.

Re: is the camera worth it - well it depends how much you think you'll use it.

The smart cover for the iPad 2 is wonderful.

The iPad 2 is noticeably thinner and lighter, which is an improvement IMO.

Some games perform better on the iPad 2, and Safari works better (it refreshes less).

Either way, don't bother with the 3G version unless you are sure you will need it.

I think you have lots of things to be stare in ipad,do I suggeast the 64GB first-generation.
  • My 32gb iPad 2 is still only half full.. but then again, i don't store much music on it (maybe 1gb) or video.

If you are at home, you can share your 'home' iTunes music from your PC.. so why load it onto the iPad? Same goes with movies.. you can use software like Boxee media manager to stream music and videos from your PC.

So, i just load movies when I want to take them with me

I personally would get the 2nd gen one, it will be updated longer than the first gen one (meaning new features) and I think you will find that 32GB is plenty of space and has more features over the first gen (cameras for video calls and photobooth) and is lighter weight,
there is an option in itunes to convert all music you put on the device to 128kbs aac (meaning less space used) and you don't have to keep films on the device as you can use home sharing (when at home) from iTunes to watch any films on the device that you have in itunes.

it really depends on how much stuff you personally are planning to permanently keep on the device, you may find you only keep a handful of apps on the device cause those are all you use, create a playlist of music you actually listen to so you don't waste space with music you will never listen to. (I would be doing that with the 1st gen too)

it may be worth pointing out that the iPad 3 may very well be available in March, at that time the 1st gen will be pretty old in apple device terms, so if you don't require the the ipad right now might be good to wait and get the best.

We have an iPad 1 and 2. There isn't much difference between them: Ipad 2 is slightly lighter, faster and has a camera. In general use you don't really notice. The camera is pretty good for FaceTime if you have other iPhone or Macbook users that you wish to see. I find 32gb more than enough.

Which ever one you get, you will be happy as they are very good toys.
