Help: PC says "acquiring network address" but already connected

My PC (running XP-Home) is connected (via ethernet cable) to a netgear DG834G router. I can login to the router and I can use the internet. But I've still got this icon in the status bar that says "Local Area Connection: Acquiring network address" and says the same thing if I view Network Connections.
Any ideas as to what is going on? I've tried restarting the router and the PC.

I wouldn't worry about this - at work (as a network manager) I often get teachers with laptops that are on using the internet but say no connection or something similar to your message.
They can also say "disconnect" when it IS disconnected and "Connect" when it IS connected.
Just a windows glitch (well, that's what i tell them).

I realise it's not critical, just find it a bit irritating. Never had it before.0

Well, I restarted PC again and this time it seems to have cleared it. :j0

Some ideas for next time:
Do you have 2 NICs in the computer?
If you refresh Network Connections does the status there change to Connected?
You could simply not show the icon as it's not that useful for a wired connection.0 -
No, just one NIC. Didn't try a refresh. Will bear that in mind should it ever happens again, though I might take your advice and disable the icon.0
