Carers Allowance Over Payment & Tax Credits

I have just been informed that I have to pay back 3 years of carers allowance money as I wasnt entitled to it even though they done a check of my wages and didnt tell me then! Fair enough I shall pay it back however my next question is because carers allowance is a taxable allowance, I declared this in the 3 years so my tax credits I was paid took this into account as an income. Does anyone know if I can amend a previous tax years figures after it has been done because at the end of the day yes I was paid it then but am now going to pay it back so surely I would be entitled to something? Can anyone help me on this one, as never had anything like this before. I am still a carer only difference is I am in a better job.
