Just got internet access on new laptop and about to laod Avast as recommended by many on here. Just gone to find Avast free download and it is asking me to do a scan with Uniblue Registryboot. Do I do this or is this unecessary? Don't want to introduce any unnecessary items.

Are you downloading from avast.com website? (Or via a link FROM there)? (You will typically be redirected to download.cnet.com).
I don't see Uniblue on an Avast link.0 -

NEver, NEVER, agree to such prompts to install toolbars/extra products/security scans when downloading programs. They are rarely if ever legitimate. Filehippo or majorgeeks are the best two download sites out there, and don't try and get you to download and install such carp before the product you actually want.
Filehippo gets the overall nod for having generally faster download servers
