  • I'd second a tumble dryer, although I don't use mine much, and air dry when I can. It can be a nightmare when I've got lots of washing and not much room to air dry so to finish it off in the dryer is a happy compromise.

I survive pretty well with a dehumidifier, provided I remember to wash things before I need them urgently, because it does dry the clothes very well in one night if they're put on drying rack overnight in the same room. It's not instant though, but it's fairly cheap to use and does remove the moisture from the house rather than vent it in to the house as some dryers do. Huge amounts of washing will overwhelm it, but one load a day is fine.

However, if I had electric in the shed/garage and could vent a dryer outside to dispose of the water vapour, I'd quite like a dryer for convenience in the winter.

We don't have a tumble dryer, there is just 2 of us and I dry everything over night around my Rayburn stove.
However, I do 2 washing machines a week, if I had family of 5 I don't think I could deal with having clothes hanging constantly in any room that you use - ie bathroom, so unless you have a laundry room that can take it I would not go for "just" dehumidifier even if they paid me for it.

Also don't forget about the less need for ironing if you take everything out of tumble dryer on time etc.. That wouldn't work with dehumidifier-some people manage not to iron even without dryer, but I only know very few of those - ask yourself truthfully - are you one of those?

To be honest ,when we have visitors and I need to wash, dry (now my drying is in the kitchen) and change 2 sets of king size bedding in a weekend sometimes I wish I had one, just for these occassions!!:-)
