Supermarket Self-service info

Right, I counted my penny jar, and I have over £100. I don't want to take them to the bank, as they take a maximum of 5 bags per day, and using the machine in the supermarket charges me.
Soooo... I wanted to buy an XBox recently, and thought: Could I buy one from Tesco/Asda and take it through self-service, and just pour all of my coins into the slot? Is there a limit to how much they can take?
Any help would be good!
Thanks,
James

There are a limit, when I worked for a supermarket, the machines would be full at £3 worth of 1p and 2p. We usually topped them up to £2 at the start of the day, so I'd advise going at night, but if the machine gets too full it will conk out.
What sort of denominations are we talking? How about trying a local post office, most of the little ones around here attached to shops will take your cash, just go at a time when it's not busy so they have time to weigh the bags

Its alot of cash to want to put into 1 of the machines, id imagine it would need emptying a few times when you put your money in.0

Damn. I was hoping for no limit. I also can't be bothered to bag them all up, as there is a lot of it (around 20kg).
May try the post office, I have the 1ps and 2ps separated, but the 5s and 10s are in a bowl together. (interesting fact, 2ps weigh exactly double 1ps, and 10ps weigh double 5ps).
I'll have to think of a new way of not paying to get my money...0 -
Find a mate with an HSBC or First Direct bank account - some of their branches now have coin counting machines which enable you to just dump it all in a tray and it will pay it into your account. I've done a test on one using a known amount of mixed coinage and it was accurate. Not sure if other banks have them yet and I suspect not all HSBC branches have them - but if you know someone that banks there (or you do) then its another option!Adventure before Dementia!0

for the sake of having stinky copper smelling fingers i would use the coinstar machine and it will save you time0

Thanks Weston Dave, I'm with HSBC so will look later.
Whamfanuk - The problem with that is that my savings end up costing money. I will be paying 8% to have my money.0 -

Can you name and shame the bank please?
Many bank services can now be done via the internet or phone, but such a low limit for cash deposits is - frankly - shocking. If you can't get or submit coins very easily at your local bank branch, what the !!!! are they still around for?
Honestly - the more I visit my local bank branch the more they seem to try and sell me crap at the desk and upsell their paid accounts - I often wish they'd concentrate on fixing the basics before trying to win my custom for other financial products - and if they told me there was a limit like this I'd ditch them within a week. Frankly, coin changes and deposits is one of the few things they've managed keep from screwing up on my accounts.
So, which bank is it? So that I know to avoid using them.0 -
Metrobank's coin machine is free I'm sure
