    Hi Tribblemaster,

E.ON have guide lines to follow when removing pre-payment meters, other suppliers may do things differently.

But, this is a guide of what E.ON would want to do to remove the meters, I must also add that each account would be looked at individually though.

If you rent the property you will need to have lived there for 12 months.

It will cost just over £50 per meter, if we agree to remove them.

We may ask to perform a credit check.

You would need to pay your future bills by Direct Debit.

It's unlikely we will remove the meters if they have been installed to collect a debt.

Sometimes pre-payment meters can help people budget as you can see where the usage is.

Also, if you go in to the emergency credit this will be claimed back when you next top so this is why the money may have ran out quickly.

    Hope this helps. :)

  • Hi, Sorry to jump on this and change the thread slight..

Im on a pre payment meter with E-on, as this was in the property when I bought it.

I have good credit and wouldnt mind paying by direct debit (Its hassle topping up the card), but again Im not too fused..

Would it be financially worth moving to DD over prepayment? If only paying £350 ish a year currently
  • Sorry that should be fussed not fused!! ha

It depends on who you are with, what they charge to remove the meters and how long you intend to remain in the property. You can still switch tariffs to get a better deal elsewhere. If your usage is low enough then Ebico's charges can be quite low. Do a comparison and check for yourself.

They need to be thinking larger figures than £10 per fuel per week. That will only just be enough to cover the emergency and the outstanding daily standing charges. Try not to ever use the emergency credit as a matter of routine. Always top up before using the emergency credit.

A budget account won't help at this time of year. They will need to be putting in over £100 a month into the account for the next 6 months before they can reduce it. They need enough to cover the winter bill. It helps to start the account just after winter and continue to put in what they were putting in every week in winter.

One thing that I wondered, is there any debt on the meter ? Are they paying for usage as well as a debt as that will mean they will need to cover : usage, debt and emergency when they topped up and that might well work out very expensive.

Surely if the card meters were taken out, your friend would simply use it as they liked and slowly slip into debt ?
I work and so does my partner but we have to turn off the gas and electric when not needed to try and keep the bills down.
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..
