Replacing a motherboard in a dell notebook

I've posted before re my dell inspiron 5160 not working (will not power up/charge the battery). It appears to be a busted motherboard (Dell diagnosed this over the phone and quoted me £267).

Anyway I stripped the laptop down to check to see if the power connection was broken (as this is apparently a common problem on dells - I can't test using the battery as it is flat and obviously can't be charged). It appears to be perfect.

I was surprised at how easy it was to strip down the laptop and am looking to find out if all I need to do to get my laptop working after replacing the motherboard is turn it on. Is there any software needed tampeing with? Also I am looking to find out if the processor is likely to have survived.

thanks in advance sam

  • Its a well known problem with 5160's there is a lawsuit in Canada with this model. For me its lasted 3 years which isn't bad. I'm thinking if I can replace the motherboard I'll leave the claiming to see if others are succesful then challenge dell on it.
