Tuesday 15th November What Small DFW Things Will You Do Today?!

  • I phoned the boss to ask if I could work from home as some little toe-rag decided to kick the drainpipe at the side of my house and break the fixings. The pipe was left languishing precariously over a public pavement so had to sort it asap.

The commuting saved me a tenner but the new fixings cost me a fiver so still a fiver up.

Knocked on a neighbours door to say that I was going shopping and did they need anything. I don't earn anything financially from it but I do get the Tesco club card points gratis as they don't collect them. Their shopping was about £19 which earned me 24 points.

When I went to Wickes for the fixings I nipped into Tesco's for my neighbour and to have a look at their reduced goods aisle. Saved another £3 on fish selling at £3 instead of £6. After Tescos's it was a stop at Aldi's for fruit and veg and a look at their 6 for value promotion. Today it was peppers at 69p instead of the usual £1.15. Spinach was on offer at 59p instead of 99p.

I needed a new toothbrush. Cheapest decent one at Tesco's was £1.79, Cool Trader had 3 of the same brand for £1 so saved about another £1.40 pro rata.

When I drilled the holes for the fixings, the neighbour accross the road (knowing I'm quite handy at DIY) asked if I could look at his gutter as it was leaking. Nothing wrong with it bar leaves / moss blocking the flow to drainpipe. Cleared that. My neighbour is an old bloke, wanted to give me a tenner being very grateful. He wouldn't take no for an answer so I just said instead if he made me a brew I'd look at his rear gutters too. Cleared them. Had a brew and a chat, and he insisted I have a bottle of Whiskey if he couldn't pay me. It was a present from last Christmas, he doesn't drink whiskey (I do!) so gave in.

Started work at about 11am and so far I'm 24 Tesco points, (about) a tenner and a bottle of Bells to the good :)

Oh what fun, Pernie!! I love the winter wonderland - you're making me homesick! I don't have a big reason to stop being veggie tbh - just felt like it was time to do something different for a bit. My first meat meal (unless you count the delicious grasshoppers they serve here...) was crocodile, wildabeast and wild bok from a game meat restaurant. Head first and all that.

Today is going to be a bit of a long one. Today:
    • breakfast at home (boy says the yoghurt was off but I had already eaten lots of it... oopes!)
    • vet came by in the morning to give the pup his last shots and some anti bs
    • matatu (firetrap minivan...) to work
    • work hard at the office as loads on
    • lunch provided by work
    • check banking and update budgets
    • going out at lunch to the market to buy some veggies - making chili for the first time in months! Need to walk through Kampala's red light district to get there so will try not to get a rash or anything on my way :rotfl:
    • check banking and update budgets
    • cancel bike lesson if it rains
    • going to my first Luganda lesson at 8 - only 10k UGX so cheapo
    • possibly going out with folk to see a Congolese film at the theaters for half price as its tuesday
    Happy tuesday everyone

Oh NTBY, I am jealous of your life some days! It always sounds so exciting just because it seems so different! I think I will definitely have to live abroad for a while, I know my OH is up for that too (depending on where we go). Do you not miss your family & old friends though? That's the thing that's holding me back really.

Sorry for making you feel homesick! I've never been there before so I'm quite excited :)

Wow, that really is diving in head first! Did you enjoy it? I still have a bit of a tough time eating "slabs" of meat (ie a steak lol) much to my OH's disapppointment as he is very much a carnivore.

DNMS - Thank you, your day is sounding fabby :)
Big Hairy Spider - Firstly, your username scares me, haha! But your post was lovely, what a wonderful neighbour you are! I hope karma has some good rewards in store for you.
Candy - Welcome back! Have a lovely week off & keep posting. Well done on the scratchcard win.
Karb - Sorry to hear that :( Will be thinking of you today x

  • Hi Pernicious,

My OH shares my logons for other forums, and when I'm online other users think I'm her and before I know it I'm pulled into a private thread for a girly chat! She hates spiders, much to my continued amusement so seeing this hopefully she'll stay off!

My savings today were entirely opportunist making good from a bad situation. I was annoyed at the little sod who'd done for my drainpipe, but saved on petrol and time commuting to work to sort it. I regularly do shopping for my neighbours. One of my own disciplines is that if I use the car it has to be for more than one reason. Even more so living rurally. It's a win-win. It saves their time and I earn club card and browny points (usually spent by OH!). For my neighbour accross the road, he's a proud man, ex-navy & old school type. I know it was hard for him to ask and a few minutes of my time provided relief for hours of him worrying about it. Sometimes doing something for someone else, especially one who'd served King and Country, means more than money. Thats what I'll take from today.
