Laptop screen goes blank - Help

I have a Compaq Presario V6000 running windows XP. Had it since mid 2006 and use it approx 3-4 hours daily.
For no reason the screen would go blank. Happens approx once or twice a week since 3 weeks ago.
Was watching a movie today when the screen went blank and no sound came out. The power light was still on and the harddrive light was not blinking.
Last week had checked and adjusted the screensaver. Had done windows update and done a check for any viruses etc. All clear.
Had to switch off the machine and then switch it back on and it works as if nothing has happened.
When the screen goes blank it is not totally black. The bottom section of the screen has light seeping through. Hope this makes sense.
Was wondering what can cause the problem. Already have a new laptop to take over but i prefer using this laptop.
