If my laptop dies and cannot boot up etc how can i retreive data from my harddrive?

I plan to back up any important data from my laptop but in case something happens it would be nice to know the answer to the above question.

My laptop runs windows XP. Have a Windows 7 laptop handy.

My guess is to open up the old laptop, retreive the harddrive, get a cable kit which will allow it to be connected to the new laptop via usb. If that is the case will i be able to access the c-drive of the old harddrive where my account has password protection?
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

Easy. take it out and place it into this 2.5" SATA To USB Hard Disk Drive Enclosure £3.19 I'm sure the password protection won't be a problem.

Yep, that. When you plug it into Windows 7 and try to access some files, it'll probably say something like "You do not currently have permission to access this file. Click Continue to gain permission" and that should be that.

Assuming of course that you haven't encrypted the disk (XP Pro only I think, you'd know if you'd done it) in which case you'd have to back-up the encryption keys too. I learnt that one the hard way.

backup using disk imaging, then if it dies from a software problem or virus, or hard disk failure, you won't lose a thing
