Best time to change registered keeper on cars

At the moment myself and the OH each have our own cars, registered and insured in our own name with the other as named drivers.

We are thinking about trading in the OH's car in the near future. However we are intending that I become the main driver of the new car and OH will then be the main driver of my car.

I would prefer to do things properly and transfer ownership of my car to OH and OH's to me.

When would be the best time to do this without incurring admin charges from the insurance company for change of details?

Insurance for both cars renews in February.

I was thinking of changing the ownership at the end of January so that the details were correct at renewal of the insurance.

Is there anything I haven't thought about?

Avoid this, the DVLA will just increase the number of registered keepers, this devalues your car.

Insurance companies generally accept that cars are owned by husband or wife.

    Quite right.

Yes that thought had crossed my mind, but I have never been asked for the number of previous keepers when I have traded in in the past and this will be the 9th car from the same dealer so I had thought it might not matter.

Will bear it in mind though and will probably ask the dealer.

I haven't owned my own car for about 15 years. We swopped use several cars ago.
It's never been a problem, we declare it's the spouses car on the insurance, and it's never cost anything.

So I would be better declaring the OH as the owner/registered keeper with myself as the main driver and vice versa?

With husband and wife it really makes no difference.

Owner is not the same as registered keeper anyway.

We've done that for over a decade.

    Thanks for the replies.

I'm just worried that I forget to fill in the details correctly when applying for insurance online, but I guess I would just get used to it.
