Why does the internet work better in the USA

I am using my laptop whilst touring the USA and I find the pages load lke lightning compared with my TalkTalk broadband back in the UK which on a speed test measures 7.4 down and .48 up. It takes so long to load some pages in the UK I have a chess game running to pass the time.
I have changed routers and double checked all the settings but it never performs anywhere near as well as MacDonalds free wifi or any other free wifi over here in the US.

  • Are you wifi at home? Is anything interfering with the signal - is it N or G? What is the signal strength of the wifi at home? Have you got lots of wifi connections at all?

All these can slow the connection speed down, that and the old excuse IP's give - the advertised connection speed is not what everyone gets...have you noticed a slow down or has it always been the same (slow speed).

I know the USA has invested in their networks but we seem to have neglected our BB network - although the last government wanted something like 80% of households to be connected wirelessly - it never happened. I work in Swindon and the council spent millions on developing a town-wide free wifi zone, did it work? Yeah right! I'm still waiting.

McD's and other shops have better wifi's because they have invested with the right technology to cope with a high demand from their customers - what's the point of offering free wifi, it it doesn't work - you'll vote with your feet and they'll lose custom. This philosophy is probably what the USA has towards customers and therefore you had a good experience. Here on the other hand - you don't.

one of the main reasons is probably that you've been accessing in areas that have cable broadband (FAR more prevalent in US than UK, and speeds of 100Mb/s are common, unlike the UK), and therefore is much faster than ADSL down a phone line.

fair-do's I'm ex-tiscali now TT, and I get a pretty good reliable service, run at 2.5-3 dB snrm and sync at 7 meg on a 50 dB line, so no complaints here :)

I usually connect to the router at home via a cable. I tried a few downloads here in Vegas and they were a bit faster on wifi than TalkTalk but it is the overall feel that is better, blink and a new page is displayed. There seems to me something other than down/upload numbers that is important.

Is this site quicker over there? Cos despite what it says on the can the speed of light is still the speed of light, there is a lot of "lag" crossing the pond.

mate, if you're on TT LLU, they will turn off the DLM for you if you ask on the support forums (don't try it over the phone, they're worse than clueless ;) )

If you're on IPStream then :p to you and the dreaded BT DLM ;):):D

actually, your downstream snrm must be massive, you're only syncing at just over half what you should be on a 28dB line :(

iltisman, if it's cable you're accessing via, then the ping times are probably pretty low, which will make a difference as well as the out-and-out speed :)

What is DLM? What difference would turning it off make?

I am with TT down 6.02 up.86 with speedtest just now. I have had speeds of double that registered??? Generally happy with that.

I have noticed periods of slower response over the last couple of months not sure if this is TT throttling capacity to encourage me to upgrade my package:(
