If you need a car and you buy a car then that is not deprivation of capital. They would need to see that you didn't need a car before they can call it deprivation of capital.

Depends what kind of car, though. If you go and spend £50k on a brand new Audi, I expect they'd be dubious about the need for that.

  • And who knows what will happen next year?! You could have another job lined up or get a payout that lasts you long enough to find a new job and never have to sign on. Or the redundancies could be stopped altogether. Or (hopefully not) you could be run over by a bus tomorrow!! Seriously, while I am earning a wage and not claiming anything from the benefits system I would not let it even enter my consciousness that it is anybody else's business what I do with my hard earned money!

exactly how I feel ! I've worked for 20+ years and have never clamed anything, nearly paid off mortgage in 10 years and have savings as we are sensible with money. I am not having some person tell me I have to use my savings to live off so thought I might as well stick it in the mortgage. Will get a nice pay off and want to go into property so not planning on claiming anyway but if needed I will, fingers crossed but I'm taking redundancy so it's deffo happening. Never been a sponger and will work as a road sweeper if necessary !!
