5th Generation ipod faulty

Hello all
I have a 5th generation 80Gb ipod video which I bought off a friend who never used it.
It was in perfect condition until the summer when I took it to France. Since I came home, there is no sound from either the headphones socket or when connected to a dock.
Some googling has shown up that this is a known fault (at least in USA) with these particular ipods where, when exposed to heat - eg left in the car in the south of France - the logic board can delaminate.
The test for this (again, according to some forums in USA) is to either
a) put it in the freezer, which makes the metal casing contract and 'remake' whatever connection is broken, or
b) press firmly just below and to the right of the click wheel and the sound should return while the pressure is applied.
I haven't done (a) but (b) does work as suggested. The American forummers claim to have plagued Apple about it and, as it is a known fault, they have received new replacements.
My question is whether this approach is likely to work over here and does anyone know how I can go about doing it? According to the Apple website it was made in 2006.
Failing that - can anyone recommend a good (and cheap!) place to have it repaired?
Many thanks in advance
M
