Tax Credits / Benefits

Hi to All!
I have read on this site many times and find it a fantastic hub of info since the fated day when my life was turned upside down when nearly lost daughter a few years ago and had to give my well paid job up £36k and wife on about £16k ( she left took it very bad what had happened and lost job , now in the swing of it and I can now work) and no child cost (parents looked after kids after school etc) but on this occasion I am looking for advise myself:

I am at the moment facing the end of a contract wich is not going to end in full time employment no body is!! :( so!
Wife can't work due to daughters care
I may earn another £1800 at part time in garage by end of year (hopefully doing the 16 hours required to get WTC

How do I stand we have 2 kids 7 and 12
7 year old has the disability
ME I will have earned £13500 by time payed to end of contract (end Nov)
WIFE for whole this year £2660
Award for this year was £10600 aprox
CTC £8465.00
WTC £2200.00

own own house Morgage £142.00 per month only £24k outstanding
I Pay full council tax £1317.00

wife cares for disabled daughter 7 (middle rate) she gets carers and we get DLA for daughter.

carers = £222.00 per month Wife
DLA = £197.00 per month Mid Rate

Final Tax Credits Descision 06/04/10 to 05/04/2011
Total income £12758.00
WTC £3098.00
CTC £7869.00

income for year 06/04/09 to 05/04/10 £8280 ( I only worked 16 hours and wife cared for daughter)

How will I fair if get no work and sign on ?
or
I do get work and gain the next £1800 ?
or
only get 10 hours part time.

Does wife careing for daughter amount to any hours towards getting WTC

Any further info required please just state what is required.
Please note I know nothing of unemployment and never have and yes I am lucky to have held on to own house.

In Advance thankyou for you constructive replys.

Please advise:

Please also consider the new system upcoming also

  • I'd phone working tax credits again as you are obviously due money for working and for your child
Also you should have got a 'back to work' grant
Never heard of WTC asking for a contract, all they need is your national insurance number and they can search your wages and contributions from HMRC
Also any loan should be scrubbed once you get employment, that's what happened to my son, his crisis loan was made null and void once he started work
Maybe you are needing to visit a 'money matter's type of advice centre, job centre or Citizens advice Bureau

As you have a disabled child, you can ring the BEL (Benefit Enquiry line, for disabled and their carers), who are usually really helpful in advising what to claim. They can also send out any forms you need.

    Freephone 0800 882 200
    Text phone 0800 243 355

You can also put your details into this, and it will assess what benefits and tax credits you may be entitled to:

You can tell a lot about a woman by her hands..........for instance, if they are placed around your throat, she's probably slightly upset. ;)

You need to get this soretd out first of all, the rules change in April next year you need to work 24 hours to claim WTC, the 16 hours per week for couples will be abolished.

You will lose your working tax credits. You will still get your child tax credits and your wife will still get her carers allowance. I guess you would have to apply for JSA. You would also get council tax benefit and IIRC after 13 weeks you would get SMI for your mortgage
only get 10 hours part time.
Then you lose your WTC actually just scrap the part time work idea you lose at every angle.

    No.
I made a mistake once, believeing people on the internet were my virtual friends. It won't be a mistake that I make again!

Social fund loans are not scrubbed when you start employment! You and your son may think they are but trust me they will come looking for him and their money, if they don't get it just now they will get it when he tries to claim benefits again.

    :rotfl:Oh my lord.
If HMRC did this what is the point of them sending out annual form and getting people to phone every year to apply or re-new their tax credits.

They're not likely to be worse off working part time, though they won't be that much better off on low hours. It might be worth part time working to keep his eye in and in case more hours become available.

Ironically after the WTC change to 24 hours for couples in April, they might become worse off working 16 hours, since SMI stops when working 16 hours. Although probably not as I'd guess with a small mortgage he'd earn too much for SMI anyway.
  • Please advise what is SMI
also what is IIRC after 13 weeks

No contract asked for by tax credits my contract of work finishes end Nov (as with agency) and will have earned £13.5k (was/am doing 36 hours)

SMI is Support for Mortgage Interest.
IIRC = If I recall correctly :) it's paid after being on certain benefits for 13 weeks, have a look at this link.
