Building up my credit rating

Hi all

I have no idea if this is in the right place and I apologise if it's not.

I am trying to build up my credit rating and have no idea what to try next.

Bit of background, I was in debt of around £6k 3 years ago and all that is settled and sorted and my credit reports all say they are settled.

I do have a CCJ which again is settled, it was a bit of a funny 1 because I didn't know they were even chasing me until they get a CCJ against me. Anyway when I received the CCJ notification 14 months ago I paid it off exactly 28 days after I knew about it (after waiting for payday).

I have a cash account with Halifax with no overdraft or anything on it, they wouldn't give me one which at the time was fair enough.

I now however am beginning to look at the future, I am saving up with my DP and we want to get on the property ladder. We know this is going to cost us a lot but we also know that we both need a good credit rating.

I applied for the Capital One credit builder credit cards last week and got told no. I am not really sure what else to do now to help to build it up.

I am on the electoral roll, I am debt free, I have now got myself a job (had interview and got it today, go me!! :D) and am ready to build up that report so that it is glowing.

Please help.

Thanks,

Babymoo

Unfortunately the CCj is registered on them, on equifax it is still registered as active although it is not and I am waiting for the certificate to get back from the courts so that I can send it to them. On callcredit and experian it is saying it is saying it is satisfied since 24th Sept 2010.

My credit records say that all debts that I have are satisfied and have been for at least 2 years. Other than this ccj stil showing as active on equifax everythign is settled n satisfied. I have had vouchers through provident in the past and never defaulted with that and thats all settled and satisfied. My credit score is 263. It says on the bad points about the score that I have no open credit accounts now which is what I am trying to change.

Thanks for your help both of you. Much appreciated.

If you paid the CCJ within 28 days then you should be able to get it removed from your files altogether, and from the registery trust lists.

Once you have done that try again for another subprime card - maybe try vanquis. If you are still refused then you may want to try opening a catalogue credit account (some people are able to get these when they cannot get anything else). Aside from that you might need to consider the cashplus creditbuilder prepaid credit card. Which will cost you £5 a month do is a bit of a last resort but something to consider.

  • thanks a lot TIXY!
  • If you can't get the CCJ removed from your file, you can add a note to it explaining the situation. It will mean that your file will need to be reviewed by a person but it may help you get credit.

I spoke to the courts and they told me that I couldn't get it removed as I paid it on the 28th day after the judgement (tbh i'm still pi**ed off they gave me the judgement when I wasn't even aware of the debt and I never had chance to do anything about the debt before it got that far!!) How do I put a note on it?

    Thanks all

Did you pay it off 28days after you first knew about it (as you said in post #1) or 28days after the judgement (as you said in post #8).
If its the latter then you can have it removed - as long as you pay a CCJ in full within 1 month of the judgement then it shouldn't be recorded on the registery trust (and so not on your credit files) - see this link from the registery trust for clarification http://www.trustonline.org.uk/understand-judgments-fines/removing-a-ccj/

I have a bad credit rating and applied for a JD Williams and Simply Be catalogue and was accepted for both.

They both gave me a credit limit of £125 to start and now JD Williams is £600 and Simply Be is £400 after five months of payments.

Payments show on my credit files and now Kay's catalogue have accepted me for a £500 limit so it just shows catalogues can improve your credit profile and dilute a bad history.

Credit score you get from credit agencies is pointless and the only thing a potential lender cares about is that you pay your bills on time and your not to much in debt.
I'm not poor i'm just skint

I paid it within 28 days of me knowing about it unfortunately. Judgement date is 12 Aug 2010 and I paid it in full on 24 Sept 2010.

Thanks for all the advice. Getting catalogue is great idea but then I'd on spend it on stuff I don't actually want if that makes sense? The idea of the Credit Card was to be able to fuel my car up with what I normally do every month and then just pay the credit card off straight away.

I have taken on some provident vouchers £50 of love2shop vouchers. I have already set aside the money to repay it so thats fine and I'm hoping that that will help me just a bit with the report to show that I am capable of not defaulting.

I pay my car insurance on a monthly premium but i'm not sure that does anything for my credit report as it's no actually on there.

Its all very confuzzling. Hopefully one day it will be good again.
