I once sent dd,4 yo with a packed of dried fruit and the teacher took it away from her, waited for me to come to pick her up and gave them back to me, telling me they are not allow that. Gladly that teacher is retired now.
I sent her to school with a jam sandwich every friday as treat, they havent say anything yet. but still they get told off for bringing different things, they bake cakes and they eat it there, it is fine, but of course i can not put it in her lunchbox, that is not fine.
My skinny and tall 4 yo tells me she can not eat biscuits or chocolate because it will make her fat.Mejor morir de pie que vivir toda una vida de rodillas.0 -

Two things here, by them banning treats in lunch boxes but yet allowing things to be baked & eaten in school are they not undermining the parents? How confusing for the kids to be basically told that treats are unhealthy and therefore we ban them, but it's ok if we make them at school.
Secondly, how many 4 & 5 year olds on just this thread have mentioned that eating chocolate, treats or whatever will make them fat or are not good for them? Surely that is not good. In that I include my 5 year old that talks a lot about food being healthy or not. I've already stated that his school don't seem to police lunch boxes, but they do talk about healthy foods/lifestyle with the kids - it does make me wonder just how much schools do this.
Yes it's a good thing for kids to be aware of food, but does anyone really think that telling them that a certain food is bad for them or indeed banning it in school is the way to cure the obesity problem we seem to be facing?
For those that have schools that ban "treats" for packed lunchers I think I would be playing the discrimination card as those that have school dinners get a "treat"
My DS isn't into pittas or wraps, he just likes white bread sandwiches or pasta or rice dishes, but his face lit up tonight when I had one of these delivered, as he can now have chilli, spag bol or his fave of sweet & sour for dinner at school0 -

ahhh now see those are definately on the banned list at our school. On our induction evening for my ds starting school the head teacher stood and said that any flasks or containers that hold hot food are not allowed
"because believe it or not in the past they had a parent send in SOUP in a thermos flask ha ha ha!!"
err and????
also the other thing she thought was shocking / hilarious was once a child came in with a CHICKEN LEG in their lunch box!!0 -
that is perfect for the winter !!... DD loves soups, so i will get one of these too.
I dont know what schools do anymore, kids are told the certain food/ treats will make them fat, my dd goes as far as saying, mummy that has a lot of calories in it,it will give you a big fat tummy Or checking her tummy after eating a bar of chocolate ? it is just not right.Mejor morir de pie que vivir toda una vida de rodillas.0 -

OMG I couldn't cope with a head like that, neither could my son lol! My god what a sheltered life she must have lead if she thought it was shocking that a child should have a chicken leg in their lunch box!
Please tell me - has your head banned home made cakes being brought in at the school fairs, or even on a child's birthday for fear that the parent's kitchen may be dirty or it may contain a foreign object?that is perfect for the winter !!... DD loves soups, so i will get one of these too.

They also do the Bento box in a smaller size (0.6L) but I went for this one cos it wasn't that much dearer and then OH and DS1 can use it too. You can just use 1 tier on it's own, which is enough for my 5 year old, otherwise it would be too big/bulky for him really. Oh and they also do a couple with kiddies designs on them as well. The girl one is pink with flowers on (is 0.6L).0 -
Can't we DO something about this? Forums such as MSE do have SOME power! It makes me really sad that the campaign for healthy eating in schools has turned into this travesty! and it IS a travesty!
any ideas people? do you think that Jamie Oliver would do a 'Healthy Eating School Meals' revisited? with emphasis on the lunchbox? He did a wonderful thing pointing out the awful state of school meals - it's not his fault that the lunchbox police are like Nazis! after all not ALL of his recipes would be allowed in lunchboxes!
Get up a petition? bombard your Local Education Dept with letters? thoughts please?
OP - sorry to hijack your thread - but, shouldnt this be sorted out?0 -
What a bloody idiot, I would kick up a serious stink. Bet they didn't tell off a child for having cheddar or white bread. Yes, encourage healthy eating but telling off a four year old? Miserable cow.
I bet she's not a picture of health or a qualified nutritionist. Are the teachers banned from sugar in their tea? Or drinking anything with caffiene at all?
They could at least give out more information on allowed foods.
Grr, I find this so flipping ridiculous. When I was in primary school only ~15 years ago I remember being forced to eat "fish feet" (fish finger padded out with potato shaped like a foot...) and biscuits and the only drink we were allowed for four hours was a small glass of full sugar squash.
Then I switched to pack lunches and everyone ate junk (except me) and we would see who could throw their cucumber slices at the wall and make them stick the highest :rotfl:
I'm glad they finally allowed it, noone should be deprived of that sticky malt loaf goodnessLiving cheap in central London :rotfl:0 -
adelight - when my kids were in primary school I was so horrified at the awful food that was served to them - yes, turkey twizzlers and those 'feet' things, everything served with chips, that I had a few rows with the headmaster - who had NO control over the school canteen.
It was the same in the hospital my son was a frequent flyer in! childrens ward lunches and suppers were the same carp they had in school! my son was dairy allergic and I had to find out about nutrition the old fashioned way. Library! and I wouldnt let them eat school or hospital food! I served good home cooked nutritious meals at home - I wasnt about to let them eat rubbish at school and couldnt get my head round why HOSPITALS would serve such rubbish - the nutritionist my son was seeing actually said to me 'thats what kids eat these days' when I raised the matter with her! unbelievable! and this was nearly twenty years ago!
now, have things got any better? not really - my kids diets were healthy but I didnt 'ban' any food unless someone was allergic! everything was acceptable - but variety was a key word to me! cucumber and carrots are healthy - unless that is ALL you eat! then they arent healthy are they? you need more than that!
sorry - this pushes one of my buttons! healthy eating is more than just sticking to lettuce and carrots and NO fat!0 -

Heh - she'd have had a bloody field day with my lunch box then. At one point my Mother owned a restaurant so my packed lunch contained leftover...had I been asked what I had the answer may well have been "Haunch of venison with a red wine jus and gratin au dauphinoise Miss":D“Don't do it! Stay away from your potential. You'll mess it up, it's potential, leave it. Anyway, it's like your bank balance - you always have a lot less than you think.”
