Finger pad on netbook HELP

Help, Since having my netbook I have been able to double tap on the finger pad to get internet links to work etc. However I have just switched on today and it will only allow me to get links to work by clicking on the button that runs along the bottom of the finger pad.
What has happened??? How can I fix this???

check the touchpad settings in control panel, or synaptics icon!!
